We are living in some crazy times. The economy is on a roller coaster and seems as though it is about to derail at anytime. We have more unemployed people than most of us have ever seen. Yet – Black Friday also known as the “biggest shopping day of the year” brings in record breaking results. People (at least some) still have money to go shopping to buy the newest gadgets and doo-dads. The reason for this post is to stir your minds up about materialism and focusing all your efforts on your worldly ‘treasures’.
In Ecclesiastes 5 we read, “He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.” (verse 10).
No amount of money will ever bring you happiness. You could have 1 billion dollars and that would not be enough. You could have the coolest TV in the world or the coolest clothes, shoes, or watch. Those things might bring you an immediate instant of gratitude – but you will not find happiness in them.
So what is the opposite of materialism and storing treasures on earth?
Christ Speaking:
“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” (Matthew 6:19-21)
Have you heard the saying, “If you want something – give it first?” Or “If you want to be happy – make someone else happy.”
Where is your heart? Where is your treasure?
Let’s look at Luke 12 (Jesus Speaking):
“Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” (verses 33-34).
Alms are donations to people in need.
The more you give – the more you get. I hope that your mind has been stirred up.
Here are some action steps:
1. Donate your clothes you don’t wear or other ‘things’ you don’t use to a shelter or charity.
2. Teach others how to be financially sound.
3. Give (time/money/food/shelter) a little bit each month.
4. Go out of your way to make someone else happy.
5. Pray for someone everyday.
“And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.” ~ Revelation 14:13
Store your treasures in heaven.
God Bless!
